TALES FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS Shamil Fattakhov
there lived a large rock named Boulder, and he was sitting firmly in the ground
at the edge of the road near a mountain village. Actually, it was not the
very edge of the road. His mighty side was pretty much popping out towards the road, making the
already narrow mountain road even narrower. The horse carriages had to slow down and carefully
circle it around, and people on the carriages often have hurt their feet hitting them on the Boulder. Perhaps, in this
village there was not a single person who had not bruises on their legs because of the Boulder. And, of course, everyone disliked him and always
scolded. Boulder listened to these hurtful talks and was very much upset. He
wanted to be useful to people, because he was so big and strong. He often
shared these thoughts with the bustling mountain stream that flowed a little lower. The river
was sorry for him. She knew how to be useful to people. Every morning women and children of the village went down to the river and fetched her pure cold
water. However, they were always grumbling that river is too shallow and the
water is difficult to fetch. But the river could not help them: she was
carrying as much water as she was given by the mountain streams flowing down from
the tops of distant blue mountains.
Onсe a very bad thing happened. Children were playing near the Boulder, and a little boy was running fast, and he didn't look forward. He hit the Boulder and fell down on the rocks by the river, breaking his leg. Adults heard children shouting and came for rescue. They pulled the boy out. Few weeks later, he walked on crutches. When he had to pass by the Boulder, he cautiously avoided it. The Boulder was very upset about this misfortune, but could do nothing about it.
the villagers decided to remove the stone. They gathered around the Boulder with shovels and took out the ground beneath. Then they pushed him down.
The Boulder flew several meters, hit a ground, bounced and fell right into the
middle of the river. There he stood, blocking the river with his huge body.
Naturally, he did not forget to immediately apologize to the river for a
surprise visit, and the river forgave him. The result was a dam, and soon in the river accumulated so
much water that people could swim. When the villagers saw this, they were glad,
and glorified both the Boulder and the river.
has become so useful to people. For this cost it is worth to change the place of
residence, isn't it?
